Barbie's Guide to Google+ Business Pages

The search engine giant, Google, is embracing social networking and business pages in a big way. Google+ Business Pages combines the interactivity of Facebook Pages with features unique to Google+ like segmentation ('Circles') and collaboration ('Hang out'). Barbie is the pseudonym of a freelance writer who, like millions of other writers all over the planet, is always looking for ways of boosting their income.

Each writer is secretly waiting to write that major inner blockbuster that goes viral overnight, generating a comfortable regular income and setting up our writing careerfor life. Until that day comes along, we continue to strive for more fruitful inbound marketing techniques.

Like Facebook, Google+ Business Pages allow you to post updates, photographs, videos and links. Unlike Facebook, Google+ allows you to create what are called 'Circles', segregated lists of subscribers. This gives the page owner the power to decide who sees what content. In our personal lives, what might be suitable content to share with our drinking buddies may not be suitable for our employer or our vicar. On Google+ Business Pages, a company might want to create different Circles for customers living in different locations or for different product lines.

Barbie has set up Circles on her Google+ Business Page for her main article topics (Breweries & Pubs, Neuroscience, Health, Christianity and General Interest), as well as a separate group for networking with other freelance writers. On her Google+ Home Page, Barbie posts content relevant to each segment of her following into the news stream of the appropriate circle. These news streams contain links to articles she has written, naturally, but also other content of interest to her growing readership.

The next step for Barbie and other Google-plussers once the circles have been created is to populate their corresponding feeds on the home page with interesting content. When you are ready to start inviting colleagues and customers to join your circles, they will not be impressed with blank pages, nor will a feed containing nothing but links to your own published conten have them beating a path to your wall! You only need a few items of content, between five and ten posts, just enough to give your page that lived-in look.

Barbie's 'Christianity' feed, for example, has links to two recently published articles, plus a few YouTube videos of her favorite worship music. As for her 'Breweries and Pubs' feed, she will have no trouble whatsoever kick-starting this page. Now that we've rearraged the furniture, put the beers on ice and put out the chips and dip, it's time to start inviting our friends to the party. Post links to your new Google+ Business Page on your Facebook status and Twitter feed, obviously. Search Google+ for other people's pages that are relevant to your own circles. You can follow them and invite them to your circles so that their posts appear on your feed. You gotta work it to get results.

Read and comment on other people's work and invite them to your Page. What we are trying to accomplish here is a cosy environment for like minds, a go-to page for information. A place to hang out. Speaking of 'hanging out', this is another feature of the Google+ environment that sets it apart from other social networking platforms. Barbie will be discussing this in a future post, along with an update of how well her party is going.Breweries and Pubs

The Day the Web Stood Still

Today Wednesday 18th January, websites such as Google, Wikipedia and Craigslist took a stand against the Governments plan to impose two bills. The Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act

Google was the first one I spotted as I aimed to research a new topic.

Craigslist was the next as my search for both an apartment and job was screeched to a grinding halt.

I applauded their bold stand, but was left thinking, what would the web be without these sites? How could we research information without Google?
The Internet has changed the way we learn, the way we communicate, and the way we grow. America is well known for its “freedom of speech” so in a land where that’s a golden rule, how can they approve such censorship?
Wikipedia is the largest web based encyclopedia with contributors all over the world collating information on every topic imaginable. Imagine a world where you’re ability to learn and expand your mind is controlled by the government.

For more information on the threat level of such bills please visit Why Wired Censored the Internet
Since the protest took place today, the decision makers have put a hold on the proposed bills. Content makers Google and Wikipedia amongst other big web site stands have impacted what was to be a simple bill to impose.
For now they are back tracking under ‘not enough information’ and that the bills need to be more thought out. They said that foreign piracy is still a big problem issues raised by these large websites will need to be addressed before anything is made finite.

Animated Movies - Dfilm

So we're looking at ways to create animated advertisements for webgeek.me to post on youtube and other viral websites to measure the effectiveness of viral marketing for small businesses.
Without any knowledge in animation it's hard to know how to start. We've used websites like xtranormal before which are now integrated into youtube. The only downside is for all the good features it costs $$$ especially if you are using the video for business.
Just for fun we tried out D-Film

Unfortunately there's no integration with youtube or opportunity to upload, so we're sharing it with you here!

Stay tuned for our animated adventures.

Amazon Drops California Affiliates

This week saw the end of my affiliate account with Amazon. Due to a new bill that enforces the collection of sales tax, Amazon has withdrawn all California affiliate programs as well as My Habitat, endless.com and smallparts.com

I received an email saying that if the law were to take affect my affiliate account would be terminated. Just a few hours later, I received the following:

Hello,

Unfortunately, Governor Brown has signed into law the bill that we emailed you about earlier today. As a result of this, contracts with all California residents participating in the Amazon Associates Program are terminated effective today, June 29, 2011. Those California residents will no longer receive advertising fees for sales referred to Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com. Please be assured that all qualifying advertising fees earned before today will be processed and paid in full in accordance with the regular payment schedule.

You are receiving this email because our records indicate that you are a resident of California. If you are not currently a resident of California, or if you are relocating to another state in the near future, you can manage the details of your Associates account here. And if you relocate to another state in the near future please contact us for reinstatement into the Amazon Associates Program.

To avoid confusion, we would like to clarify that this development will only impact our ability to offer the Associates Program to California residents and will not affect your ability to purchase from Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com.

We have enjoyed working with you and other California-based participants in the Amazon Associates Program and, if this situation is rectified, would very much welcome the opportunity to re-open our Associates Program to California residents. As mentioned before, we are continuing to work on alternative ways to help California residents monetize their websites and we will be sure to contact you when these become available.

Regards,

The Amazon Associates Team

Automatic mobile rendering for Google Site

Logged into blogger recently?

When I logged in this Tuesday to post a new blog in my journal, I was met with the question "Would you like to render your blog for mobile viewing?" YES! I said.
With no effort on my part, my blog was now accessible via mobile with optimized viewing on my droid. This will make road blogs much easier.

As mobile web progresses it is becoming almost mandatory to optimize your website for mobile viewing.

Access this great new feature by going to General settings under More actions > Manage site and clicking on Automatically adjust site for mobile phones, your Google site will be automatically adjusted whenever it’s viewed from an iOS or Android 2.2+ device:

You can even view in your browser how your website will appear on a mobile

More actions > Preview as viewer then select Mobile from the yellow Preview page as viewer (Mobile | Desktop)

Geo-Location - Marketing Tool or Criminal Playground?

Apps such as Foursquare and Loopt have taken targeted marketing to a new level. Now users can send and receive information based on their location. Using smart phones such as Blackberry, Droid and the iPhone, businesses can target customers with relevant ad’s and information that updates as the user’s location changes. Social apps and websites all start out as a way for people to connect with each other, following this businesses seek to use this information to their advantage. What starts out as social quickly becomes another way to market and sell products. Just as advertisers posted on bathroom walls, buses, and taxi cabs, they now seek to target you in your most personal settings, now your phone! As marketing progresses, is it becoming more invasive? What measures do companies such as Foursquare and Loopt have in place to allow you to switch off ads and maintain privacy?

With Geo-Location you can check in at cafes, bars, stores even your workplace. This is great for connecting with friends (and advertisers) but how do you protect kids downloading, signing up for these apps and sharing their info?

Not to say that Geo-Location isn’t a fantastic and innovative way for marketers and users to interact, but there is an unknown privacy issue, especially in an age of identify theft. How much of the information you share, is being shared?

For marketers Geo-Location is a valuable tool. It takes the use of demographics to a new level. Websites such as Google, Hulu and Facebook have been using Geo-location for some time, delivering ad content based on a user’s location often based from the IP address. However proxy servers, and IP re-directs can alter the validity of these location based results.

There’s no doubt that Geo-Location is a useful tool for advertisers and businesses, however there is a huge risk as a consumer dependent on how much information you choose to share. People have become more open and trusting with their personal data. How this will impact online crime and data theft is open for discussion.

How is Social Media Changing the Way Businesses Relate to Customers?

Social Media is the newest form of advertising, customer service and business management. So new in fact that many businesses are resistant to be involved. Social networks such as twitter and facebook have transformed the way people communicate about brands and products.

Word of mouth has often been the most sought out form of advertising, but initiating it has been the most difficult part. Now with the advent of new technologies, customer reviews, recommendations, tweets and wall posts, a recommendation for a product from a friend has become even more valuable to the consumer and business than traditional forms of advertising.

Using social media to your company’s advantage is still in it’s infant stages. This article seeks to explore the effects of social media on your business, and identify the advantages and disadvantages of developing your social online presence.

Exploring and identifying your niche.

Before entering your business into the world of social media it is important to research similar markets and competition in your chosen niche. How are other businesses engaging in social media? Identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Negative Feedback

Inevitably, by opening your business to a public forum there is the chance of negative feedback. Not exactly what you had hoped for when you decided to engage yourself in social media.
Before you start deleting facebook pages and cancelling your twitter account, look at how other businesses react.
What corrective measures do they use for negative feedback?

If a customer is reporting negative feedback it is important to focus on the underlying problem. Does the feedback identify something you can change? How do you respond to the feedback?
Consider developing the missing link. This is the most important, and free research that your company can use.

Facebook has innovated the way we can target our market. Once you have identified who your market is, facebook makes it incredibly easy to access their huge database with information that users publicly share. People offer their age, location, political views and more on their basic profile. Although businesses do not have open access to these profiles, they do have the option to target their ad’s at individual users who have shared their information.
Using targeted ad’s you can select the demographic for your business you wish to attract. Never before has niche marketing been made so relatively easy. Remember walking through a shopping mall and someone with a clipboard trying to stop you for some market research? Companies spent hours and $$ on manpower to gather market research, most of which was ambiguous and unreliable. People forged information through fear of privacy.

Facebook is still developing their privacy policies. Users can choose which information they share, and which notifications they want appearing in their news feed. If a brand shows up too often in the news feed, a user can hide that option. Finding a balance for your business to engage users instead of irritating them will be an important part of your social media strategy. As with other forms of advertising, consumers will become blind and seemingly filter our unnecessary ad’s. In the beginning of the Internet marketing age banner ads were the best thing since sliced bread, but people grew tired quickly and began to ignore them.

Risk Factors for businesses in social media.

Opening up your business to a public forum is scary for businesses. It involves relinquishing control and giving a part of your brand to engage users. Many businesses are intimidated by social media for this reason, but can you afford to ignore it?

Social media does leave you more open to criticism then before, however even if you’re not already actively social, customers still have the opportunity to give their opinions of your business regardless of whether or not you’re on twitter or facebook. The tools are already there.

It is important to establish guidelines for your business on how you want to be perceived. The notion of a corporate culture has been transformed and is still changing. Businesses are becoming more personal. Customers identify with businesses that relate to their personality.

Before the advent of the internet, businesses had control over the message they were relaying to their customers. Now the situation has almost fully reversed. The consumer is in charge. The key, is listening to what they have to say, identifying their issues, anticipating reactions (be it reviews, or blog posts) and satisfying these issues. The premise of marketing is still the same, the process is a little different.
